Greater Mount Calvary was formed in 1964 as the result of a split from Mount Calvary Church. Four families decided to have an organizational meeting at the home of Bro. & Sis. Jimmy Akins which led to the formation of the Church. The four families were Bro. & Sis Johnnie Kirby, Sis. Laurel Howard, Bro. & Sis. Jimmy Akins and Bro. Lorenzo Ford. They were joined by Bro. & Sis. Roosevelt Bradley and Bro. Roosevelt Duncan. These were the originators of the history of Greater Mount Calvary Church. Services were originally held in a house located at 220 Flynn Road rented from Bro. Lorenzo Ford. During this time, sixteen other people from Mount Calvary joined them.
Rev. Crump was the first presiding minister. Rev Blake officially organized the church. Rev. Artis Hobbs was the first pastor of the organized church assisted by Rev A.L. Banks. They served from 1964-1966.
Following them was Rev. Roosevelt Jackson from 1966-1968.
Rev J.C. Pettis Jr. was the pastor from 1968-1985.
Rev. Earnest Wright served from 1985-1986.
Rev. Dr. Marquest Taylor l was elected in August 1986. He served until his retirement in 2009. The present pastor is Rev. Dr. Henry K. Ewing. He officially became pastor on February 8, 2010.
There were several building phases throughout the years which lead to the current worship facility.
From 1964-1976 was phase l under the leadership of Rev. Jackson.
The second phase was from 1976-1990 under the leadership of Rev. J.C. Pettis. Phase lll was under the leadership of Rev. Taylor from 1990-Present.
Currently, under the leadership of Rev. Ewing, the vision is set for Phase lV.
